THE USE OF SCAFFOLDING STRATEGY TOWARDS STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN READING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Study on the Eight Grade Students of SMPN 1 Dukuhturi in the Academic Year 2012/2013)
Key Word: Scaffolding Strategy, students’ reading achievement
This research discusses about the use of scaffolding strategy towards students’ achievement in reading descriptive text in junior high school. The teachers are expected to make some efforts to help the students to improve their reading comprehension. The objective of the research is to find out whether this strategy gives positive effect to the students’ ability in reading achievement especially in reading descriptive text.
Based on the theory, the research hypothesis then is as follows: teaching reading through scaffolding strategy can give positive effect on the students’ reading achievement after they are taught by using scaffolding strategy in the eighth grade at SMP N 1 Dukuhturi, Tegal Regency in academic year 2012/2013.
This research is experimental research. In conducting the research, the writer uses two group designs as research design. The population of this research is the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Dukuhturi Tegal which consist of 277 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to take the sample of the research. The total sample of this research is 60 students that is divided into two groups. The first group namely experimental group which consists of 30 students who are taught by using scaffolding strategy and the second group namely control group which consists of 30 students who are not taught by using scaffolding strategy.
In this research, the writer used multiple choices reading test as the instrument of research which consist of 30 items. The writer conducted a try-out test on 30 students who have the same ability with the research samples to determine the validity and the reliability of the test instrument. Data analysis is tested by using t-test formula. The score of t-table at 5% level of significance and on the degree of freedom 58 is 1,645. While, the calculation data of t-test is 3,061. So, t-test is higher than t-table (3,061>1,645). According to this result, the hypothesis is accepted. It means there is positive effect on the students’ reading achievement after they are taught by using scaffolding strategy of the eighth grade students at SMP N 1 Dukuhturi, Tegal Regency in academic year 2012/2013.
The conclusion of this research is teaching reading through scaffolding strategy can give positive effect on the students’ reading achievement at the eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Dukuhturi, Tegal Regency is accepted.
The writer suggests that the teachers need to use scaffolding strategy in teaching reading because scaffolding strategy is easy to be implemented and learned. By using this strategy the students are able to participate in study as group and individual learning. It also can be used to improve the reading skills.
