THE EFFECT OF USING SINGLE SLOT SUBSTITUTION DRILL TOWARDS STUDENTS’ GRAMMAR MASTERY (An Experimental Research at the Seventh Grade Students of MTs NU 03 Suradadi – Tegal Regency in the Academic Year of 2012/2013)

The objectives of this study are to find out the positive effect of using single slot substitution drill towards students’ grammar mastery and to find out whether or not there are significant differences between the students who are taught by using single slot substitution drill and the students who are not taught by using single slot substitution drill at the seventh grade students of MTs NU 03 Suradadi in the academic year of 2012/2013.
This research is a kind of experimental research. The research design is two-group design. The population of this research is 123 students of the seventh grade in MTs NU 03 Suradadi; it is divided into 4 classes. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the samples of the research. They are divided into two groups. The first group consists of 30 students who are taught by using single slot substitution drill (experimental group) and the second group consists of 30 students who are not taught by using single slot substitution drill (control group).
In collecting the data, the instrument which is used is a test which is in multiple choice form of grammar test that consists of 30 questions. The validity and reliability of the instrument are tested by using statistical analysis of correlation product moment.
The result data of this research is tested by using t-test. It shows that t-ratio is 5,483 whereas t-table with degree of freedom (58) and the level of significance 5%, the value of t-table is 1,960 (5,483 > 1,960). It means that the objectives of the research are achieved. It could be concluded that the use of single slot substitution drill gives positive effect to the students’ grammar mastery.
