THE EFFECT OF CONTENT BASED INSTRUCTION TOWARDS STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ABILITY (An Experimental Research on the First Grade Students of SMP Walisongo Talang Kab. Tegal in the Academic Year of 2012/2013)

The objective of this research is to find out whether there is possitive effect on students vocabulary ability who are taught by using Content Based Instruction (CBI) and who are taught without by using Content Based Instruction (CBI). Based on review of related literature and logical framework the hypothesis of this research is; The deginition of CBI is an approach to second language teaching is organized around the content or information that students will acquire, rather than around a linguistic or other type of syllabus. And also CBI gives positive effect on Students’ vocabulary ability on the students of SMP Walisongo Talang, Kab. Tegal.
The writer uses quantitative research as research approach, experiment research as research type, and two-grroups design as research design. The writer gives a test for two groups. From the result of test will be compared to find out wheter there are any significant difference between the students who are taught using Content Based Instruction (CBI) and the sudents who are taught without using Content Based Instruction (CBI) and to find out whether there is possitive effect on students vocabulary ability who are taught by using Content Based Instruction (CBI) and who are taught without by using Content Based Instruction (CBI).
The population of this research is the first grade students of SMP Walisongo Talang Kab. Tegal; the sample of this study is 60 students. The samples are divided into two groups namely experiment group and control group, each consists of 30 students. This research uses cluster random sampling technique to take the sample. There are two kinds two variable : dependent variable and independent variable. The instrument used in this research is test. Type of test used is multiple choice with 4 options; a,b,c, and d. The writer conducts try-out test on 30 students who have the same ability with research samples to determine the validity and reliability of the test instrument.
The writer uses SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) to computed analyze data. Data analysis is tested by using t-test, to test the average difference of two groups. The t-table is 2,000 at the 5% significance level and degrees of freedom (df) 58. The calculation of data obtains t-test 2,947, so t-test is higher than t-table (2,947>2,000). It means that the hypothesis of this research is accepted.
Based on the result of this study, it is concluded that CBI gives possitive effect on students’ vocabulary ability. By using Content Based Instruction (CBI), the students are expected can more know and understanding English vocabulary. And also can make students’ motivation towards students’ vocabulary ability.
