THE EFFECT OF USING COLLABORATIVE FEEDBACK ON STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN WRITING NEWS ITEM TEXT (An Experimental Study at The Tenth Graders of SMA Negeri 1 Brebes in the Academic Year 2012/2013)

The aims of this thesis are to figure out the implementation of collaborative feedback on students’ achievement in writing news item text, to find out the students’ responses of collaborative feedback use on students’ achievement in writing news item text, and to find out whether there is positive effect on students’ achievement after they are taught by collaborative feedback. Collaborative feedback is a kind of technique in writing English by giving and getting feedback collaboratively among students and teacher and improving their writing based on the feedbacks given by students or teacher.
Based on the theory, the research hypothesis is drawn as follows: there is positive effect on the students’ achievement in writing news item textat the tenth graders of SMAN 1 Brebes in academic year 2012/2013 after they are taught through collaborative feedback technique. This study is experimental. The research is conducted using two group designs; the first group is called experimental group who is taught by using collaborative feedback, while the second group is called controlled group who is not taught by using collaborative feedback. Each group consists of 30 students. The sample is taken by using cluster random sampling technique.
Two tests are used by the writer to know the improvement of writing achievement. The tests are pre and post test. Pre test is used before the students are taught by using collaborative feedback. Post test is applied after the students are taught by using collaborative feedback, and to find out whether or not there is effect on the students’ achievement in writing news item text. The writer uses questionnaire as well to know students’ responses of the implementation of collaborative feedback technique.
The data shows; score of t table at 5% level of significance and on the degree of 58 is 1,645. While t0 is 2, 528, so, t0 is higher than t table (2,528> 1,645). According to the calculation, hypothesis is null is rejected, and hypothesis alternative is accepted. It means, there is a positive effect on the students’ achievement in writing news item text after they are taught by using collaborative feedback technique at the tenth graders of SMAN 1 Brebes in academic year 2012/2013. The result of questionnaire shows that 93,33% students think that collaborative feedback gives positive effect on their achievement in writing news item text.
