THE EFFECT OF USING SECRET MESSAGE GAME TOWARDS STUDENT’S ACHIEVEMENT IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT (An Experimental Research on The Tenth Grade Students of SMA N 1 Larangan-Brebes in The Academic Year 2012/2013)

The objective of this research is to find out whether there is positive effect on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text after implementing secret message game (An Experimental Research on The Tenth Grade Students of SMA N 1 Larangan, Brebes in The Academic Year 2012/2013). The research is conducted using two group designs; the first group is called experimental group who is taught by using secret message game, while the second group is called controlled group who is not taught by using secret message game. Each group consists of 30 students. The sample is taken by using cluster random sampling technique.
The instrument that the writer uses in this research is simple essay writing of descriptive text with the topic “someone whom you admired”. The writer applies two tests, they are pre test and post test. Pre test is given before the students are taught by implementing Secret Message game, and post test is given after the students are taught with Secret Message Game. Test is exerted to find out whether there is positive effect in students’ writing ability in descriptive text. The writer assesses the writing test through writing scoring rubric.
Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test in order to know whether research hypothesis is accepted or not. Based on the result with the degree of freedom (df) 58 on the level significant of 5% t-table is 1,645. It shows that t-ratio of the research is 7,468. It means that t-ratio is higher than t-table (7,468>1,645), so that hypothesis null is refused, while alternative hypothesis is accepted.
The result of this research is that there is a positive effect of using secret message game towards students’ achievement in writing descriptive text at the tenth grade students of SMA N 01 Larangan-Brebes in academic year 2012/2013. Playing games is one of the effective and efficient ways to improve students’ ability. Teacher should be creative in using learning method or learning strategy because implementing the right method or strategy will make students more enjoy in learning English.
