THE EFFECT OF USING METACOGNITIVE STRATEGY TOWARDS THE STUDENTS’ READING ABILITY (An Experimental Research of the First Grade Students of SMA N 3 Slawi in The Academic Year 2012 / 2013 )
Key word : The Effect, Metacognitive Strategy, Students’ Reading Ability.
The objective of this research is to find out whether or not the use of metacognitive strategy gives positive effect towards the students’ reading ability.
Based on review of related literature and logical framework, the hypothesis of the research is proposed as follows: There is a positive effect in using Metacognitive Strategy toward students’ reading ability.
This research is experimental which its design is two group design. The population of this research is all of the first grade students of SMA N 3 Slawi in the academic year of 2012/2013. The total number of the population is 280 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample of the study. The sample consists of two groups; the experiment group (X5) and control group (X6). The number of the samples is 60 students. The writer uses post-test as the instrument of research. The test takes 90 minutes to do. The type of the test is multiple choices with five options. To know Validity and Reliability of the instrument, the writer had tried out the instrument by giving test to try out group (X1) that have the same competence with the sample of the study.
Based on the data analysis, the t-test is 3,3454 with the degree freedom 58 of the significance level of 5% t-table is 1,645. The computation shows that t-test is higher than t-table (3,3454 > 1,645). It means that hypothesis of the research is accepted.
In conclusion, there is positive effect of metacognitive strategy towards students’ reading ability. As a result, this thesis is recommended for educational practitioners such as teachers, students, and other researchers.
The writer suggests that the teachers need to use metacognitive strategy in teaching reading because metacognitive strategy is easy to be implemented and learned. It is also can be used to overcome some barriers of the students who think that reading is difficult to be learned.
