THE EFFECT OF USING THREE-STEP INTERVIEW TECHNIQUE TOWARD THE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY (An Experimental Study to The Second Graders of SMA N 2 Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2012/2013)
Key Words : Three-Step Interview Technique, Speaking Ability.
The objective of this research is to find out the effect of using Three-Step Interview Technique toward the students’ speaking ability (An Experimental Study to the Second Graders of SMA N 2 Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2012/2013).
The research is done by classifying sample into two groups. They are the experimental group and control group. Each group consists of 30 students. The samples are taken by using random sampling technique. They are divided into two groups, group one is the experimental group that consists of students who are taught by using Three-Step Interview Technique and group two is the control group who are taught without using Three-Step Interview Technique.
The experimental class is given a speaking test (interview). The writer uses interview as the instrument to know students’ speaking ability after they are taught by using Three-Step Interview Technique. The writer gives a posttest for students having the same competence with the sample. In the posttest of experimental class, the students average score is 77,87, variance score is 72,5, and standard deviation is 8,5. In the posttest of control class, the students average score is 70,13, variance score is 78, and standard deviation is 8,83.
Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test. Based on the result with the degree of freedom (df) 58 on the level significant of 5 % t-table is 1,645 and t-ratio is 3,452. It shows that t-ratio is higher than t-table (3,452 >1,645). It means that there is a significant difference of the speaking ability between students who are taught by using Three-Step Interview technique and the students who are taught without using Three-Step Interview technique.
The conclusion of this research is that Three-Step Interview technique is effective and gives positive effect on the students Speaking ability at the second grade students of SMA N 2 Pemalang in academic year of 2012/2013.
The writer suggests that the teachers need to use Three-Step Interview Technique in teaching speaking because Three-Step Interview Technique is easy and interesting to be implemented. Beside that, the teachers need to use Three-Step Interview Technique to improve the students’ speaking ability.
