THE EFFECT OF USING PROBLEM BASED INSTRUCTION (PBI) TECHNIQUE TOWARD THE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study of the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Dukuhturi 1 Tegal Regency in Academic Year of 2012/2013)

The objective of this research is to know about The Effect of using Problem Based Instruction technique on the eighth grade students vocabulary achievement of SMP Dukuhturi 01 Tegal Regency in the Academic Year of 2012/2013.
Based on the review of related theories and frame of thinking, the research hypothesis is proposed as follows: The use of Problem Based Instruction technique gives positive effect on the students vocabulary achievement.
Population of this research is the eighth grade students of Dukuhturi 01 Junior High School Tegal Regency, the number of population students is 352 students. The writer takes 80 students of two Classes. The sample are divided into two groups namely experiment group and control groups, each consists of 40 students, the first group is the students who are taught by using Problem Based Instruction Technique and the second group is the students who are not taught by using Problem Based Instruction Technique.
This research uses random sampling technique to take the sample. The instrument used in this research is test, the test contains 40 items by time 90 minutes to do. The test type is multiple choice with four options; A, B, C and D for each item, each of correct answer is given 1 point and each of wrong answer is given 0 point. The writer conducts try-out test on 40 students of different class who have the same ability with research samples to determine the validity and reliability of the test instrument.
The research data is gained from the English test that has been given to research respondents during first semester. Validity of the research computed by using r-table. The writer found that r-table with N=40 then the level of significant 5%, is 0,312, so r-test is higher than of the r-table (0,471 > 0,312 ). It can be said that the test is valid. Data analysis is computed by using t-test formula.
Based on the computation data analysis, t-ratio is 4,286. On the level of significant 5%, found t-table 2,000. It means that t-ratio is higher than t-table (4,286 > 2,000). It shows that there is a significant the students’ vocabulary achivement who are taught by using Problem Based Instruction Technique.
