THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING SEMANTIC MAPPING STRATEGY TOWARD STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY (An Experimental Study at the Second Grade Students of Accounting Department of SMK Bhakti Praja Talang in the Academic Year of 2012/2013)
Key Words: Semantic Mapping Strategy, Students’ Vocabulary Mastery.
The objectives of this research are to find out whether the use of semantic mapping strategy gives positive effect to the students’ vocabulary mastery and to find out whether there is a significant difference in vocabulary mastery between the students who are taught by using semantic mapping strategy and those who are not taught by using semantic mapping strategy.
The population of this research is the whole students in the second grade of accounting department of SMK Bhakti Praja Talang, in the academic year of 2012/2013 as many as 61 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the samples for two groups. The first group is the experimental group and the second group is the control group. The sample is 60 students. Each group consists of 30 students.
Based on the theoretical background, the hypothesis of this research is proposed as follows: The use of semantic mapping strategy gives positive effect toward students’ vocabulary mastery of the second grade students of Accounting Department of SMK Bhakti praja Talang and there is a significant difference in mastering vocabulary between the students who are taught by using semantic mapping strategy and those who are not taught by using semantic mapping strategy.
In collecting the data, the writer used a test as instrument of the research. The type of the test that is used in this research is vocabulary test. The test consists of the materials of vocabulary based on the syllabus. The form of the test is multiple choices consisting of 30 questions. The time allocation to do the test is 90 minutes. Afterwards, data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test. The result of t-ratio is 2.270, whereas t-table 2.000 at significant level of 5% and degree of freedom is 58. The result of t-ratio is higher than t-table.
From the result of the data analysis, it could be concluded that the use of Semantic Mapping Strategy gives positive effect to the students’ vocabulary mastery and there is a significant difference in mastering vocabulary between the students who are taught by using semantic mapping strategy and those who are not taught by using semantic mapping strategy. Thus, teachers could use semantic mapping strategy to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery.
