THE EFFECT OF COOPERATIVE INTEGRATED READING AND COMPOSITION (CIRC) METHOD TOWARD THE STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING NARRATIVE TEXT (An Experimental Study on the Eight Grade Students of SMP Negeri 17 Tegal Regency in the Academic Year 2012/2013)

Writing is the most difficult skills of language for students. Although some efforts have been done, but the results have been not satisfied yet. CIRC is one of the learning methods based on cooperation, is designed to develop reading, writing and other language skills in the upper grades of primary education.
The objective of this research is to find out whether there is different reading achievement between students who are taught using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method and students who are taught without using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) method to their ability in writing narrative text.
This research is experimental design. The population of this research is 191 students; the sample of this research is 64 students. The samples consists of two groups namely experiment group and control group, each group consists of 32 students. This research uses simple random sampling technique to take the samples. The instrument used in this research is a test. The types of tests is multiple choice with 4 options; a,b,c and d. The writer conducts try-out test on 32 students who have the same ability with the research samples to determine the validity and reliability of the test instrument.
Data analysis is tested by using t-test, to test the average difference of the two groups. At 5% significance level and degrees of freedom (df) 62, t-table is 2.000. The calculation shows that t-value is 2.842. From the calculation it shows t-value is greater than t-table (2.842>2.000). It means that the hypothesis of this research is accepted. CIRC has positive effect towards the students’ writing achievement. The mean score of experimental class is higher than control class. The experimental class is 8.15 and the control class is 7.16. It means that CIRC has improved the student’s writing ability.
This research suggests that teachers should use CIRC method to improve students’ ability in writing. Even though this method is good in improving student’s writing ability, teachers should combine this method with other’s method due to avoid students bored. The teachers should also be careful in preparing the material and the methods steps. Careless preparation would only create noisy class.
The conclusion of this research is that using CIRC method gives positive effect on the student’s ability in writing narrative text on the eight grade students in the second semester at SMP N 17 Tegal in academic year 2012/2013.
