THE EFFECT OF LEXICAL APPROACH ON STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT ( An Experimental Study to the Eight Graders of SMP N 3 Larangan- Brebes in the Academic Year of 2012 / 2013 )
Key words: Lexical Approach, Students’ Vocabulary Achievement.
The objective of this research is to find out the effect of using lexical approach on students’ vocabulary achievement. The writer uses experimental research as the method of the research, with two-group design. To check the students’ vocabulary achievement, the writer applies two tests; they are pre-test and post-test. Pre-test is used to find out the students’ vocabulary achievement before they are taught by using lexical approach. Post-test is used to find out whether or not there is positive effect of the lexical approach to the students’ vocabulary achievement.
The population of this research is the eight grade students of SMP N 3 Larangan-Brebes which consists of 352 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the samples of the research. The number of samples of this study is 60 students, there are 30 students in the experimental group and 30 students in the control group.
Data analysis of this research is tested by using independent sample t-test. Based on the result with the degree of freedom (df) 58 on the significant level of 5% and t-table is 2,000, it shows that t-ratio is higher than t-table (2,378>2,000). It means that there is a significant difference of the vocabulary achievement between the students who are taught by using lexical approach and the students who are taught without using lexical approach.
The conclusion of this research is that using lexical approach gives positive effect on the students’ vocabulary achievement to the Eight Graders of SMP N 3 Larangan- Brebes In The Academic Year 2012 / 2013.
