THE EFFECT OF PORTFOLIOASSESSMENT TOWARDS STUDENTS’ ACHIEVMENT IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXT (An experimental study to eight grade students of SMPN 1 Slawi in academic year 2012/2013)

The objective of this research is to find out the effect of Portfolio Asssessment towards Students’ achievement in writing recount text (An experimental study to eight grade students of SMPN 1 Slawi in academic year 2012/2013). The research is done by classifying sample into two groups they are the experimental group and Control group. Each group consist of 25 students. The sample is taken by using cluster random sampling technique. They are devided into two group, group one is experimental group consist of students who are taught by using Portfolio Assessment method and group two is control group consist of students who are taught without using Portfolio Assessment method.
The sample of research are given a writing test. The writer gave pre-test to experimental and control group before giving treathment to experimental group and giving post-test to each group after giving treathment to experimental group.
Data analysis of the research is tested by using t-test. Based on the data analysis, t-ratio is 1, 7085. The writer consults it to t-table with 5% significant level and the degree of freedom (df) = (n1+ n2) -2 = (25 + 25) – 2 = 48. The writer finds the t-table is 1,645. It mean that t-ratio is higher than t-table (1, 7085 > 1, 645). Because of the result of t-test is higher than t-table, so the null hypothesis (Ho) is refused and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. It means that is a significant difference between experimental group and control group.
It can be concluded that there is a significant difference between students that using portfolio assessment and the students that without portfolio assessment. It also means that hypothesis of the research that states “Using Portfolio Assessment will improve student’s achievement in writing recount text” is accepted and portfolio assessment gives positive effect towards students’ achievement in writing recount text.
