THE EFFECT OF PREVIEW, QUESTION, READ, REFLECT, RECITE, AND REVIEW METHOD (PQ4R) IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT TOWARD STUDENTS’ READING ABILITY IN JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Study at The Eighth Grade Students in SMP N 3 Tegal in the Academic Year of 2013 / 2014)

The objectives of this research are to identify whether or not Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, and Review Method (PQ4R) gives positive effect towards students’ reading ability and to see the difference of the students’ reading ability before and after applying PQ4R Method on the eighth grade students of SMP N 3 Tegal in the academic year of 2013/ 2014.
The population of this research is the eighth grade students of SMP N 3 Tegal in the academic year of 2013/2014 with the total 154 students and the writer takes 60 students as the sample. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample that is divided into two groups. The first group is the experimental group and the second one is the control group. Each group consists of 30 students. The instrument of this research is multiple choice reading test which consists of 40 items.
The data is analyzed by using t-test to know whether the hypothesis is accepted or not. By the result of data analysis shows that t-test is4,112, and then the writer took it into the t-table with 5% significant level with d.f is 58. T-table with d.f 58 is 2,000. The result of t-test is4,112 and t-table for d.f 58 is 2,000. It is shows that the result of t-test ishigher than t-table (4,112> 2,000), so the null hypothesis (Ho) and hypothesis (H1) is accepted. It can be concluded that the effect of the application of PQ4R gives positive effect on students’ reading ability at the eighth grade of SMP N 3 Tegal in the academic year of 2013/ 2014.
