THE EFFECT OF USING SEMANTIC MAPPING ON STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study to the Fifth Grade Students of SD Negeri Jatilaba 03 Tegal Regency in the Academic Year of 2012 / 2013)

The objective of this research is to know the difference between the students who are taught by using Semantic Mapping (Experimental Group) and the students who are not taught by using Semantic Mapping (Control Group) in teaching English vocabulary to the fifth grade students at SD Negeri Jatilaba 03 (Experimental Group) and SD Negeri Jatilaba 04 (Control Group).
The objectives of this research are to find out whether or not the use of Semantic Mapping technique gives positive effect to the students at fifth grade in Elementary School.
Population of this research is the fifth grade students of SD Negeri Jatilaba 03 and 04 Tegal Regency, the population of students is 530 students. The writer get 80 students to be the sample of the research by using random sampling. The sample consists of two groups; There are 20 students are try out to test the instrument and 60 students are for the sample of the research. The first group is the students who are taught by using Semantic Mapping Technique and the second group is the students who are not taught by using Semantic Mapping Technique.
The writer uses vocabulary test as the instrument of the research. The test needs 1 x 45 minutes to do. The type of the test is multiple choice with 4 options A, B, C; D. To know the reliability and validity of the instrument, the writer had tried it to 20 students who have the same competence with the research sample.
The research data is gained from the English test that has been given to research samples during second semester. Validity of the research is computed by using r-table. The writer found that r-table with N=20 then the level of significance 5%, is 0,444, so r-test is higher than the r-table (0,550 > 0,444 ). It can be said that the test is valid. Data analysis is computed by using t-test formula. Based on the computation data analysis, t-test is 3,248. On the level of significance 5%, it is found that t-table is 2,000. It means that t-test is higher than t-table (3,248 > 2,000). It shows that there is a positive effect in teaching English vocabulary to the students at fifth grade who are taught by using Semantic Mapping Technique.
