THE EFFECT OF APPLYING GUIDED READING METHOD TOWARD STUDENTS’ READING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Research at First Grade of SMP N 15 TEGAL in Academic Year of 2013/2014)

The objective of this research is to know about of Guided Reading Method has a positive effect towards the students’ achievement in reading (An Experimental Study on the first Grade Students of SMP Negeri 15 Tegal in the Academic Year 2013/2014). The writer uses two group design by applying pre-test and post-test control group design. The sample is taken by cluster random sampling technique. The sample is divided into two groups; first group is experiment group which consists of students who are taught by Guided Reading Method and second group is control group which consists of students who are not taught by Guided Reading Method. Each group consists of 30 students.
Data analysis of this research is finding from the result of reading test which is given to the sample of the research. The data was analyzed by t-test, with t-test 2,700 on the degree of freedom (df) 5% t-table is 1,645. This t-table proves than t-test is higher that t-table (2,700>1,645). It means that the result of the test from experimental group is higher than the control group. Based on that result, it can be stated that the hypothesis is accepted
Thus, it can be concluded that Guided Reading Method gives positive effect towards the students’ achievement in reading, especially for those who are on the first grade of SMP Negeri 15 Tegal in the academic year 2013/2014. Based on the conclusion, it can be stated that Guided Reading Method can be recommended as a method that can be used by the English Teachers.
