THE EFFECT OF USING GROUP DISCUSSION METHOD TOWARD STUDENTS’ READING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study in the first Grade Students of State Senior High School 1Wanasari in Academic Year 2013/2014)

The objective of this research is to find out the effect of using group discussion method towards students’ reading achievement in the First Grade Students of State Senior High School 1 Wanasari in the Academic Year 2013/2014. The research is done by classifying sample into two groups they are the experimental group and control group. Each group consists of 30 students. The sample is taken by using cluster random sampling technique. They are divided into two groups. Group one is experimental group which consists of students who are taught by using group discussion method and group two consists of student who are taught without using group discussion method.
This research is experimental research. In conducting the research, the writer uses two groups designs as research design. The population of this research is the first grade students of State Senior High School 1 Wanasari which consists of 120 students. In this research, the writer used multiple choice reading test as the instrument of research which consists of 30 items. The writer conducted a try-out test on 30 students who have the same ability with the research samples to determine the validity and the reliability of the test instrument. Data analysis is tested by using t-test formula. The score of t-table at 5% level of significance and on the degree of freedom 58 is 1,645. While, the calculation data of t-test is 3,06. So, t-test is higher than t-table (3,061>1,645). According to this result, the hypothesis is accepted. It means there is possitive effect on the students’ reading achievement after they are taught by using group discussion method of the first grade students at SMA N 1 Wanasari in academic year 2013/2014.
The conclusion of this research is teaching reading through group discussion method can give positive effect on the students’ reading achievement at the first grade of SMA N 1 Wanasari.
The writer suggests that the teacher needs to use group discussion method in teaching reading becasuse group discussion method is easy to be implemented and learned. By using this method the students are able to participate in study as group and individual learning and also can be used to improve the reading skill.
