THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PODCAST IN THE TEACHING OF SPEAKING FOR FIRST GRADE STUDENTS OF SMK (An Experimental Research to First Grade Students on SMK NU 1 Slawi)

The development of internet technology has very important role in this modern era. For each year the number of user growing rapidly. Human life is much helped by the internet. Such as, shopping, business and education. Everyone can play as communicator through their own media such as blogs, YouTube or internet radio.
There are two types of internet radio, Streaming and Podcast. The difference is Streaming must be connected to internet to access while Podcast have to download beforehand. The Podcast was found by Adam Curry in 2000 and started in Indonesia since 2005. The aims of this thesis are to figure out the implementation of using podcasts in the teaching of speaking for first grade student of SMK and to find out the effectiveness of using podcasts in the teaching of speaking for first grade student of SMK.
Based on thetheoretical foundation, the research hypothesis is drawn as follows: There is positive effect for first grade students of SMK in the teaching of speaking by using Podcast as learning media.This is an Experiment Study at First Grade Students of SMK NU 01 Slawi in Academic Year 2013/2014. Total of population of this research is 415 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling as the method to get the sample. The writer also used two group design in this research. The total of the sample is 60 students, 30 students for experimental group and 30 students for control group.
Conversation tests are used by the writer to know the effectiveness of using podcasts in the teaching of speaking for first grade student of SMK. The test had been held in the end of the meeting, post-test. The conversation test recorded for purpose of analysis. In the spoken assessment there are 5 elements to scoring the speaking ability, the writer divided the score of grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency appropriate with scoring beginner level or in this research student of vocational high school.
The data shows; score of t table at 5% level of significance and on the degree of 58 is 1.645. While t0 is 2.379, so, t0 is higher than t table (2.379>1.645). According to the calculation, hypothesis null is rejected, and hypothesis alternative is accepted. It means, there is an effectiveness of using podcasts in the teaching of speaking for first grade student of SMK at the students in first grade at SMK NU01 Slawi in academic year 2013/2014.
