THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PARTICIPATION POINT SYSTEM (PPS) METHOD IN THE TEACHING OF READING FOR THE SECOND GRADE STUDENTS OF VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Study in SMK Muhammadiyah Belik in The Academic Year of 2013/2014)

The objective of this research is to know about the effectiveness of Participation Point System (PPS) Method in the teaching of reading for the second grade students of vocational high school at SMK Muhammadiyah Belik-Pemalang.
Based on the related theory and logical framework, the hypothesis of the research is proposed as follows: “Participation Point System (PPS) Method is effective in the teaching of reading for the second grade students of Vocational High School”.
The populations of this research is the second grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah Belik-Pemalang and the total number is 308 students. The sample is taken by using random sampling technique. The sample is devided into two groups. An experimental group and control group and each consist of 30 students. The experiment group is the students who are taught by using Participation Point System Method and the control group is the students who are taught by using Grammar Translation Method.
The writer uses test as the instrument of the research. The writer gives 30 items of multiple choice test. In order to know the reliability and validity of the test, the writer gives try out test with 40 items to the 30 students who has the same competence with the sample of study.
The data analysis of this research is tested by t-test, for testing the difference between the two groups. On the level of significance 5% and degree of freedom (df) 58 we can get t-table = 1,645 and t-test = 4,5045. It shows that t-test is higher than t-table (4,5045>1,645). It means that there is a significant differences between the students who are taught by using Participation Point System Method and the student who are taught by using Grammar Translation Method.
It can be concluded that the use of Participation Point System Method is effective in the teaching of reading for the second grade students of Vocational High School. The teacher should use Participation Point System Method as alternative method to teach reading to their students.
