THE EFFECT OF USING ANDRAGOGY METHOD ON THE WRITING ACHIEVEMENT OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Study in SMP N 1 Ulujami in the Academic Year of 2013/2014)

Writing is a process of discovering and organizing ideas. The students have some difficulties to build and develop their idea. In this research the writer applies the andragogy method to help students especially in practising writing. The objective of the research was to know whether using andragogy method can give positive effect on the writing achievement of the Eighth Grade Students of Junior High School at SMP Negeri 1 Ulujami in the Academic Year of 2013/2014.
Based on the background of the problem and logical framework, the writer makes the hypothesis that the application of andragogy method has positif influence to the writing achievement of the eighth grade students of junior high school.
This research used quantitative approach. The sample of this research was 2 classes from 7 classes taken by using cluster random sampling technique. Each class consists of 40 students. The writer only took 25 students. The instrument of this research was a test. The writer used writing test. The writing test was in form of arranging sentences into good paragraph. It consisted of 10 questions with 90 minutes of allocation. Before doing the test, the writer took try-out test. The try-out test is to find the validity and the reliability of the test.
Based on the result of data analysis t-test is 2,198 with degree of freedom (df) 48 and the level of significance 5%. Because the test is higher than t-table (2,198 >1,645), it means that the null hypothesis (H˳) is not accepted and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. It means that andragogy method gave positive effect to students’ writing achievement at the eighth grade of SMP N 1 Ulujami.
The writer has some suggestion for English learning especially writingsubject. The teacher should make teaching and learning process as fun as possible. There are two examples of creating fun teaching and learning process. They are playing game and watching educational video.
The conclusion of this research is the students who are taught by using andragogy method get better achievement than the students who are taught by using grammar translation method.
