THE EFFECT OF USING WORD PUZZLES AS TEACHING MEDIA TOWARD THE STUDENTS’ ENGLISH VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study of theFifth Grade Students of SD N 01 PedagungBantarbolangPemalangRegency inAcademic Year 2013-2014)

There are 4 skills in learning English. They are reading, writing, listening and speaking . In elementary school, students have been taught to memorize vocabulary such as the kinds of fruits, the kinds of animals,etc. Because of that, vocabulary achievement is very important and teacher must be careful to choose and use a media.
The problem of this research is “Does word puzzles as teaching media give positive effect to students’ vocabularyAchievement?”.The purpose of the study is to know whether there is positive effect of using word puzzles to students’vocabulary Achievement.
The population of this research is 62 students. The sample in the research is divided into two groups. The first group is experimental group that consist of 31 students of SD N 01 Pedagung, the second group is control group that consist of 31 students of SD N 02 Pedagung. The writer uses two group design as research methodology. The sample consists of two groups, the first group is experimental group and the second group is control group. The experimental group were taught by using Word Puzzles and the control group is the group who were not taught by using Word Puzzles.
Based on the data analysis, the t-test is 2.465with the degree of freedom 60 on the significance level of 5% t-table is 2.000. The computation shows that t-test is higher than t-table ( 2.465 > 2.000 ). It means that the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of the research is that there is a significant difference of students’ vocabulary Achievementbetween the students who were taught by using Word Puzzlesand the students who were not taught by using Word Puzzles. It could be said that the application of word puzzles gives positive influence on students’ vocabolary Achievement.
