THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING SEMANTIC MAPPING STRATEGY IN THE TEACHING OF READING COMPREHENSION ON EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Study in SMP N 1 Wanasari in the Academic Year 2013/2014)

The objective of this research is to find out whether the implementation of Semantic Mapping Strategy gives the possitive effect or not toward the students’ reading achievement of reading comprehension on the eight grade students of Junior High School at SMP N 1 Wanasari in Academic Year 2013/2014.
The population of this research is the eight grade students of SMP N 1 Wanasari with 315 students. The writer takes the sample by using cluster random sampling. The writer uses cluster random sampling to choose the sample in group randomly. There are nine classes in SMP N 1 Wanasari, it means that there are nine groups of sample. The writer chooses two classes of it, the first group as experimental group, and the second group as control group. The writer needs 60 students to be devided into two classes, 30 students for each group to experimental and control group. In the experimental group, the writer implements semantic mapping strategy. For the control group, the writer implements questioning strategy.
This research is experimental research that involves two variables, they are the implementation of semantic mapping strategy and the students’ comprehension. Those variables are influenced each other as the function of this research is to see whether the implementation of semantic mapping strategy can influence students’ comprehension on reading lesson.
The research instrument that used in this research is multiple choices that consists of 30 questions. To measure the validity and the reability of the test, the writer tries out the instrument to the try out group which consists of 40 questions.
The data is analyzed by using t-test formula. It shows that t-test result is 5,148 with the degree freedom 58 and the level of significant (∝) 0.50 = 1,671. It shows that t-test is higher than t-table (5,148 > 1,671). As the t-test is higher than t-table, hypothesis of this research is then accepted.
Based on the result of the data analysis, the writer can conclude that the implementation of semantic mapping strategy gives possitive effect to the students’ reading achievement of the eight grade students of SMP N 1 Wanasari in the academic year 2013/2014. Therefore, it is suggested to the teacher to implement semantic mapping strategy as this strategy is easy to applicate and easy to acceptable to the students.
