Key Words: Dramatic Approach, and Reading Narrative Text Comprehension
Some students have difficulties in reading because they have not truly mastered reading skill. Students will get dizzy when they read. It happens because they lack of vocabularies. Thus, they cannot understand the meaning of words in a text. In addition, most of teachers use traditional way in teaching reading narrative text. They only use textbook. They force the students to find the meaning of words in dictionary and memorize them.
The objective of the research are to describe the implementation of dramatic approach to improve students’ comprehension in reading narrative text, and to prove if dramatic approach will improve the students’ comprehension in reading narrative text at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Adiwerna in the academic year of 2013/2014.
Reading is an ability which can enable readers to get certain message, grasp information by the process of it, and can understand the meaning of the text. In the process of it, readers need to use their background of knowledge, vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, experience and some strategies to help them understanding what the text means.
The population of this research is the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Adiwerna in the academic year of 2013/2014. The sum of the eighth grade students is 316.The sampling technique which the writer used in the research is cluster random sampling. The sample of the research is 60. Design of this research is two group design. Data collecting technique in this research is reading test. Data analysis technique in this research is t-test.
The data shows score of t table at 5% level of significance and on the degree of 58 is 1.645. While t0 is 5,228, so t0 is higher than t table (5,228>1.645). According to the calculation, hypothesis is null is rejected, and hypothesis alternative is accepted. It means there is a positive effect on the students’ reading comprehension of narrative text after they are taught by dramatic approach.
Based on the research, it is suggested that teacher has to manage the time and the class well because dramatic approach needs much time. It also demands the teacher to be very creative and confident in giving example of some acts in implementing dramatic approach. For reading, when the students want to read a text, the teacher can discuss the text implicitly in the class first before the students read the text. It gives them a chance to ask some new vocabularies which they don’t understand.
