THE EFFECT OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SEMANTIC MAPPING TECHNIQUE TOWARDS STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY (An Experimental Study of the Seventh Grade Students of MTs. Ma’arif NU 04 Songgom in Academic Year of 2013/2014)

The objective of the research is to find out the effect of the implementation of Semantic Mapping Technique towards Students’ vocabulary mastery at the seventh grade students of MTs. Ma’arif NU 04 Songgom in Academic year of 2013/2014.
Based on review of related literature, logical framework and hypothesis of this research is the use of semantic mapping technique give positive effect towards students’ vocabulary mastery.
The population of this research is the seventh grade students of MTs. Ma’arif NU 04 Songgom in Academic year of 2013/2014. The total population is 150 students consisting of 4 classes. Based on total of the population, the writer takes 60 students as the sample by using cluster random sampling technique. The writer divides into two groups. The first group is experimental group (who are taught by semantic mapping technique) and the second group is control group (who are not taught by semantic mapping technique).
In collecting data, the writer uses reading test as the instrument of the test as the instrument of the research which is in multiple choice. The tryout instrument of the research consists 50 test items. There are 41 test items and 9 invalid test items. Then, 40 valid test items are used as pre test and post test for the sample of research.
The data analysis is calculated by using t-test formula. Based on the result of calculation, the value of t-test is 1,802, where is the table is 1,672 at the 5% significant level and degree of freedom (df) 58. It shows that the t-test is higher that t-table (1,802 > 1,672). It can be concluded that the use of semantic mapping technique give a positive effect towards students’ vocabulary mastery of the seventh grade students of MTs. Ma’arif NU 04 Songgom in Academic year of 2013/2014.
