THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE APPLICATION OF EXAMPLE NON EXAMPLE METHOD IN THE TEACHING OF VOCABULARY TO THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS (An Experimental Study of the 5th Grade Students in Kecamatan Tegal Barat in the Academic Year 2013/2014 )

The objective of this research is to know whether there is more effective teaching use Example Non Example Method in the teaching of vocabulary to the elementary school students (an experimental study of the 5th grade students in Kecamatan Tegal Barat in the academic year 2013/2014 ). Based on the theoretical foundation and the logical framework, the hypothesis is proposed as follows: Example Non Example Method is more effective in the teaching of vocabulary.
The population of the research is the fifth grade students in Kecamatan Tegal Barat. To collect the data, the writer took 50 students from the population as the sample. The writer used two group design, the first group and second group. First group consisted of 25 students and the second group consisted of 25 students. Then both of them were given the same vocabulary test.
The writer used a multiple choice. This test consists of 40 items which have four options. The students did the test in 30 minutes.
The data of this research is gained from the vocabulary test that was given to the sample of this research. To analyze the data, the writer used t-test to know the difference between the two groups. Based on the result of the data analysis, t-ratio is 5,685 with the degree of freedom (df) = (n1+n2) – 2 = (25+25) – 2 = 48. On the level of significance 5%, it is found that t-table is 2,010. It means that t-ratio is higher than t-table (5,685 > 2,010). It can be concluded that hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of this research is there is more effective teaching use Example Non Example Method in the teaching of vocabulary to the elementary school students (an experimental study of the 5th grade students in Kecamatan Tegal Barat in the academic year 2013/2014 ). We know that there are many students who are still scare and shy to speak in English. The teachers should have variation in teaching learning process. Teachers are able to use a new method or new technique such as with using Example Non Example Method (using picture) to make students enjoyable and easier to understand the material in teaching learning process, especially in teaching vocabulary at elementary school.
