THE EFFECT OF USING PROCESS BASED APPROACH TOWARDS THE STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN WRITING PARAGRAPH (An Experimental Study to the Eleventh Grade Students of MAN Pemalang in the Even Semester of the Academic Year of 2013/2014)
Key Words: Process Based Approach, Writing Ability, Paragraph
This thesis investigates whether process-based approach contributes towards students’ ability in writing paragraph. This study, thus, intends to find out whether teaching stages in process-based approach help students to write paragraph better (i.e., in terms of unity and coherence), whether the use of process-based approach is effective in teaching writing paragraph to students and whether there is significant difference between the students taught using process-based approach and those who are not. To meet the objectives of the study, two-group experimental research design was employed. The data was obtained from administering pretest and post test. The idea of process-based approach to teaching writing, as Emig (1971 cited in Kroll, 2001: 20) points out, deals with the fact that the ways in which students writer produce text do not necessarily match the model that had been traditionally taught.
Based on the review of related literature, the hypotheses of this study are “Process based approach is effective to teaching writing paragraph to the eleventh grade students of MAN Pemalang in the academic year 2013/2014 and that there is significant different between students taught using process-based approach and those who were not in terms of the ability in writing paragraph”.
The population of this research is the eleventh grade students of MAN Pemalang in the even semester of academic year of 2013/2014consisting of 10 classeswhose total numbers of the students are 401. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to determine the sample of the research. Afterwards, the writer takes two classes for the experiment and control class. In this research the writer only involves 20 students each class as the sample.
According to the result of data analysis, it is known that at the significant level of 5% and 38 degrees of freedom, the comparison shows that the t-test is higher than t-table (5.77 > 2.02). Meanwhile, from “Paired sample t-test” it shows that its significance value is lower than that of significance level of 5% (0.001 < 0.05). This means that the hypotheses proposed are accepted.
From the result, then, it can be concluded that the use of Process-Based Approach to teaching writing paragraph is effective and is contributive to the significant difference of ability in writing paragraph between the students taught by using Process-Based Approach and those who are not in particular the eleventh grade students of MAN Pemalang in academic year of 2013/2014.
