THE EFFECT OF USING NUMBERED HEAD TOGETHER (NHT) TECHNIQUE TOWARD VOCABULARY MASTERY OF FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (An Experimental Study on the Fifth Grade Students of SDN 01 Iser Petarukan in the Academic Year of 2013/2014)
Key word: Numbered Head Together Technique, Vocabulary Mastery.
The objective of this thesis is to find out whether Numbered Head Together Technique give positive effect to the students’ vocabulary mastery. Numbered Head Together technique is the one of learning methods which motivates the students to be active. This technique divides the students into groups to discuss about the vocabulary material. Based on the theory, the research hypothesis is drawn as follow: There is a positive effect to the students’ vocabulary mastery who are taught by using Numbered Head Together technique in the Fifth Grade of Elementary School (An Experimental Study on the Fifth Grade Students of SD N 01 Iser Petarukan in the Academic Year of 2013/2014).
This is experimental research. In conducting the research, the writer uses two groups design. Population of the research is the fifth grade students of SD N 01 and SD N 02 Iser Petarukan, which is totally 68 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to take the sample of research. The total of sample is 40 students. From the samples of students, 20 students are taken as experiment group who are taught by using Numbered Head Together technique, whereas 20 other are taken as control group who are taught without using Numbered Head Together technique. To check the students vocabulary mastery, the writer uses a vocabulary test as the instrument of the research. The type of the test is multiple-choice test.
The description of the data obtained between group I (Experiment Group) with a mean value (7,5) and group II (Control Group) with a mean value (6,25) average. Afterward, to analyze the data the writer uses t-test to know the differences between two groups. From the data, the score of t-table at 5% level of significance and the degree of freedom (df) 38 is 2,024, while the t-ratio is 4,629. So, t-ratio (t0) is higher than t-table (4,629 > 2,024). According to this calculation, hypothesis null is rejected, and hypothesis alternative is accepted. It means, there is a positive effect to the students vocabulary mastery who are taught by using Numbered Head Together technique. Thus, Numbered Head Together technique should be applied to increase students’ vocabulary mastery especially in Elementary School.
