THE EFFECT OF THE APPLICATION OF REAP TECHNIQUE ON READING COMPREHENSION ACHIEVEMENT OF THE SECOND GRADE STUDENTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Study in SMPN 12 Tegal in the Academic Year 2013/2014)

The objective of this research is to find out the effect of Reap (read, encode, annotate, ponder) technique on students’ reading achievement. REAP primarily is a cognitive enrichment approach that teaches students to think more precisely and deeply about what they read, using following four-step strategy.
The research is done by classifying into two group they are the Experiment group and Control group. Each group consists of 30 students. The sample is taken by using cluster random sampling technique. Experiment group consists of students who are taught by using Reap Technique and control group consists of students who are taught without using Reap Technique.
The population is given a test containing 40 Multiple choice items. The writer uses multiple choice as the instrument to know the validity and reability of the instrument. The writer gives a try out for students having the same competence with the sample.
Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test. Based on the data analysis, t-ratio is 2.7089 with the degree of freedom (df) 58 on the level of significant of 5% t-table is 1.645, it shows that t-ratio is higher than t-table (2.7089> 1.645). It means that there is significant difference of the reading comprehension between students who are taught by using reap technique and the students who are taught without using reap technique.
Using REAP Technique in teaching reading is recommended as an alternative way for the English teacher, especially for Junior High School teachers to attract the students’ interest and motivation in learning English. REAP Technique makes students reading material can be understood in detail, and it makes the students enjoy in the learning process. So, it can improve the students reading comprehension.
The conclusion of this research is reap (read, encode, annotate, ponder) technique gives positive effect on students’ reading achievement of the second grade of SMPN 12 Tegal in academic year 2013/2014
