THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PROBING - PROMPTING TECHNIQUE ON THE READING ACHIEVEMENT OF THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ( An Experimental Study in State Junior High School 1 Dukuhwaru in Academic Year 2013/2014)
Keyword :The Effectiveness, Probing - Prompting technique, Reading achievement.
The Objective of this research is to find out the effectiveness of using probing-prompting technique on the reading achievement of the seventh grade students of state junior high school 01 Dukuhwaru in academic year 2013/2014
The hypothesis of the research is that there is a significant difference of students’ achievement in reading between those who are taught by using Probing–Prompting technique and using TAI technique in the seventh grade students of State Junior High School 01 Dukuhwaru in academic year 2013/2014.
The population of the research is the seventh grade students of State Junior High School 01 Dukuhwaru in the academic year of 2013/2014. The total number of population is 315 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample of the study. The number of the sample is 60 students. The sample consists of two groups. The writer uses two-group design in the research experimental group and control group. The experimental group consists of 30 students who are taught by using Probing–Prompting technique and control group consists of 30 students who are taught by using TAI technique. The writer uses a test as the instrument of the research. The type of the test is multiple choice test with four options A, B, C and D. To find the validity and reliability of the instrument, the writer has tried out the instrument by giving test to 30 students having the same competence with the sample of the study.
The data of the research are gained from the result of reading test done by the sample of the research. The data analysis is tested by using t-test. Based on the result of data analysis t-test is 2,775 on the level of significance 5% and degree freedom (df) is 58 and the t-table is 1,645. Based on the data calculation, t-test is higher than t-table ( 2,775>1,645). It means that the hypothesis of this research is accepted.
Based on the result of the research it can be concluded that there is a significant difference of students’achievement in reading between the group of students who are taught by using Probing–Prompting technique and the group of students who are taught by using TAI technique at the seventh grade of State Junior High School 01 Dukuhwaru in Academic Year 2013/2014.
