THE EFFECT OF USING AUDIO LINGUAL METHOD ON STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY (An Experimental Research to the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 5 Tegal in the Academic year of 2013/2014)

This research is purposed to describe the implementation of Audio Lingual Method in teaching English speaking and its giving effect on students’ speaking ability. The researcher uses quantitative research as the approach, experimental research as the type, and two group design of the research. To check the influence of this method on students’ speaking ability, the writer applies a tests. The test is given for both groups. The result of the test will be compared to find out whether or not there are differences between the students who are taught by using Audio Lingual Method and to find out whether or not there is positive effect of Audio Lingual Method on students’ speaking ability.
The population of this research is the eleventh grades students of SMAN 5 Tegal which consists of 238 students from seven classes. The researcher uses random sampling technique to choose the sample of the research. The sample of this research is 60 students. There are 30 students of experimental group and 30 students of control group.Based on the data analysis, the t-test is 3.541805 with the degree of freedom 58 on the significant level of 5% t-table is 2.002. The computation shows that t-test is higher than t-table (3.541805 >2.002). It means that the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of the research is that there is a positive effect of Audio Lingual Method on students’ speaking ability. By using Audio Lingual Method, it is expected that the students receive useful strategies in speaking by getting extensive oral instruction such as drill the students’ pronunciation so that their speaking will be clear and smooth and fluent without stopping to think.
