THE EFFECT OF THE APPLICATION OF WORD MAPPING STRATEGY ON THE VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ( An Experimental Study of Second Grade Students at SMP Negeri 1 Ulujami in the Academic Year of 2013/2014)

The objective of this research is to know the effect of the application of word mapping strategy on the vocabulary achievement of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Ulujami in academic year 2013/2014.
Based on the background of the problem and logical framework, the writer makes the hypothesis that students who are taught by applying word mapping strategy gives positive effect than students who are taught by applying word wall strategy on the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Ulujami.
The research is experimental. In conducting the research, the writer used two group designs. Population of reseacrh is the students of the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Ulujami which is totally 320 students. the cluster random sampling technique is used to take the sample. The consist of 60 students that was divided into two groups. Sample 1 as experiment group consists of 30 students who are taught by word mapping strategy and sample 2 as control group consits of 30 students who are taught by word wall strategy. Afterwards, the writer do the equality test of the sample of this research to know the equality the sample in this research. The equality of the sample in this research by using t-test that is from middle semester score both of the sample. Strategy in this research, the writer used multiple choice vocabulary test as the instrument of the research which consist of 40 items. The time allocation to do the test is 60 minutes. The test arranged according to the material given. To know the validity and reliability of the instrument, the writer tries out the instrument by giving the test to 30 students who same competence with the sample of this research and the test consist of 50 items
To analyze the data, the writer used t-test formula to know the effect of application of word mapping strategy. The result of research shows that t-test is 4,066 with degree of freedom 58 and the level of significant (α) 5% the t-table is 1,645. It is absolutely said that t-test is bigger than t-table (4,066 > 1,645), because of the t-test is bigger than t-table, so that hypothesis of the research is accepted. From the calculation above, it proves that there is a significant difference vocabulary achievement between the students who are taught by using word mapping strategy and the students who are taught by word wall strategy.
The writer could take conclusion that the application of word mapping strategy give positive effect on the students’ vocabulary achievement of the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 1 Ulujami in Academic Year 2013 / 2014.
