THE EFFECT OF USING FREEWRITING TECHNIQUE TOWARDS STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL (An Experimental Study at the Second Grade Students of SMA Negeri 2 Slawi in the Academic Year of 2013/2014)

Writing is an act of discovering and communicating ideas, feelings, thoughts, and expressions through a piece of paper which requires some aspects and several steps. However, the students faced some problems in learning writing. Therefore, the writer applied freewriting technique in writing skill. This study aims to determine 1) whether freewriting technique can bring a positive effect to the students’ writing skill and 2) the students’ responses after being taught by using freewriting technique.
The population of this study was the second grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Slawi in the academic year of 2013/2014. The sampling technique used was Cluster Random Sampling. The sample in this study was 60 students covering 30 students of XI IS 4 as the experimental group and 30 students of XI IS 2 as the control group. The instruments of collecting data were test and questionnaire. The test was a writing test in 90 minutes. The technique of analyzing data used was t-test with significance level 1 % and degree of freedom ( n + n – 2) 58. The t-test of this research was 4,217 while the t-table was 2,392. The result of the questionnaire given to the experimental group showed that 83,3% of the students agreed that the application of freewriting technique can help them improving their writing skill.
The result of this research showed that freewriting technique gives a positive effect towards students’ writing skill. Furthermore, freewriting technique can help the students improve their writing skill.
Based on the research findings, it is suggested to use freewriting technique in teaching and learning writing. It is recommended to add some activities or procedures in applying freewriting technique in writing class in order to avoid students’ boredom in making text.
