THE EFFECT OF USING SILENT DEMONSTRATION METHOD TOWARD READING ACHIEVEMENT OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Study in SMA N 1 Sragi in the Academic Year of 2013/2014)

The objectives of this research is to know the effect of using silent demonstration method toward reading achievement of the eleventh grade students of SMA N 1 Sragi in the academic year of 2013/2014.
Based on the review of related theories and frame of thinking, the research hypothesis is proposed as follows : The students who are taught using silent demonstration method have better reading achievement than students who are taught by grammar translation method.
The population of this research is all of the eleventh grade students in the second semester of SMA Negeri 1 Sragi in the academic year 2013/2014. The total number of the students are 264. The samples of the research are 60 students taken by using cluster random sampling. They are classified into two group, group I consists of 30 students as experiment class who are taught by silent demonstration method and group II consists of 30 students as control class who are taught by using grammar translation method.
The writer uses reading test as the instrument of the research. The type of the test is multiple choice tests with five options. To know the validity of the instrument, the writer had tried out the instrument by giving a test to 30 students having the same level competence.
t-test is used to know the difference result of two groups. The result of calculation analysis shows that t-test = 3,182, and then it is consulted to the level of significance 5% t-table = 1,645. It means that the result of t-test is higher than t-table. The hypothesis of this research is accepted.
The conclusion of this research shows that the use of silent demonstration method has positive effect towards reading achievement to the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Sragi in the academic year 2013/2014.
