THE EFFECT OF USING PACER (PREVIEW, ASSESS, CHOOSE, EXPEDITE AND REVIEW) METHOD ON STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION OF NARRATIVE TEXT (An Experimental Study on the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 01 Losari in the Academic Year of 2013/2014)

The objectives of this research are to find out whether there is positive effect on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text after they were taught by using PACER method and to find out whether or not there is significant difference between the students who were taught by using PACER method and the students who were taught without using PACER method. (An Experimental Study on the Eleventh Grade Students in SMA Negeri 01 Losari - Brebes Regency in the Academic Year of 2013/2014).
The population of the research is the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 01 Losari in the academic year of 2013/2014. The total number of population is 146 students. The writer used cluster sampling technique to choose the sample of the study. The number of sample is 60 students. The sample consists of two groups. The experimental group and control group, and each group consist of 30 students. To find out the validity and the reliability of the instrument which consists of multiple choice items, the writer had tried out the instrument by giving of test to the try out group which consisted of 30 students whom the same competence with the samples of the research. The samples of this research are given a post-test containing 30 multiple choice item with five options A, B,C, D and E. The test is about narrative text with time allotment is 60 minutes.
The data of the research are gained from the result of reading test done by the samples of the research. The data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test. Based on the result of data analysis ttest is 4,9522 on the level of significance 5% and degree of freedom 58 ttable is 2,000. It shows that ttest is higher than ttable (4,9522>2,000). It could be concluded that there is significant difference in reading comprehension of narrative text between the students who are taught by using PACER method and the those who are not taught by using PACER method at the second grade students of SMA Negeri 01 Losari in the academic year of 2013/2014.
The writer suggests English teachers in Senior High School to implement PACER method to motivate students in learning reading especially in comprehending a narrative text so they could get high result in English reading comprehension.
