THE EFFECTIVENESS OF IMPLEMENTING DIRECTED READING-THINKING ACTIVITY (DRTA) STRATEGY TOWARD STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN READING RECOUNT TEXT (An Experimental Study on the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Al Irsyad Tegal in the Academic Year 2013/2014)

The objective of this research is to find out The Effectiveness of Implementing Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DRTA) Strategy Toward Students’ Achievement in Reading Recount Text” (An Experimental Study of the Second Grade Students of SMP Al Irsyad Tegal in Academic Year of 2013/2014).
Based on the theoretical background and logical framework, the hypothesis of this research is “Implementing of DRTA Strategy gives positive effect Toward Students’ Achievement in Reading Recount Text” (An Experimental Study of the Second Grade Students of SMP Al Irsyad Tegal in Academic Year of 2013/2014)”. In other word, the students who are taught by using DRTA strategy have high score than the students who are not taught by using DRTA strategy.
The population of this research is the second grade students of SMP Al Irsyad Tegal. The number of population is 135 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique with two groups design to choose the sample of the study. They are devided into two groups. The first group is the experimental group that consists of students who are thought by using DRTA strategy and the second one is the control group who are not thought by using DRTA strategy.
The research instrument that is used in this research is multiple choice tests which consist of 30 items and each item has four options. To know the validity and the reliability of the instrument, the writer gives a try out for students having the same competence with the sample of the study.
The data is analyzed by using t-test formula. It shows that t-test result is 7,343, the writer consult is to t-table with the level of significant 5% and degree of freedom (df) 58. The writer finds that t-table is 2,002. It proves that the result of t-test is higher than t-table (7,343 > 2,002), because the result of the t-test higher that t-table so the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of this research shows that Directed Reading-Thinking Activity Strategy gives the positive effect on the students’ achievement in reading recount text at SMP Al Irsyad Tegal in academic year of 2013/2014). Based on the conclusion, it can be stated that DRTA strategy can be a recommended strategy that can be used by the English Teachers.
