THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING INSIDE OUTSIDE CIRCLE TECHNIQUE IN THE TEACHING OF VOCABULARY FOR THE FIRST GRADE STUDENTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Research on the First Grade Students of SMPN 1 Tegal in the Academic Year of 2013/2014)

The aim of this thesis is to explain how the application of Inside Outside Circle Techniques in teaching vocabulary, and to find out if there is positive effect to students after using the technique of Inside Outside Circle. Inside Outside Circle technique makes the students know the new knowledge in learning vocabulary and can also assist the teacher in the learning process.
Based on the theory, the research hypothesis made by the writer is as follow: there is a positive effect on students' vocabulary mastery of the first grade at SMPN 1 Tegal in the Academic Year 2013/2014 after being taught using Inside Outside Circle technique. This experimental research uses
two-group design. The population in this research were all first grade students of SMP N 1 Tegal in the academic year of 2013/2014. There are 8 classes with the whole students are about 240 students. Cluster random sampling method is used by the writer to get a sample and took 60 students consisting of 2 groups: the experimental group and the control group. Each groups consisting of 30 students. The data were obtained from the vocabulary test which contained 40 questions; it took 60 minutes to do. The type of the test is multiple choices with four options a, b, c, and d.
The data of this research is gained from the test that was given to the sample of this research. To analyse the data, the writer used t - test to know the difference between the two groups. Based on the result of the data analysis, the results of computation is: the means of group I is 8,5 and group II is 7,74, t - ratio is 5,688 with the degree of freedom (df) 58 and the level of significance 5%, and the t- table is 2,000. It means that t-ratio is higher than t-table (5,688 > 2,000). It can be concluded that the hypothesis of the research is accepted.
The conclusion of the research is students who are taught by using Inside Outside Circle technique got higher achievement than those students who are taught by using conventional technique in the teaching vocabulary for the first grade students of SMPN 1 Tegal in the academic year of 2013/2014.
