THE EFFECT OF USING WORD CHAINS GAME TOWARD THE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study at the Fifth Grade Students of SD Negeri 03 Slawi Kulon Tegal Regency in the Academic Year of 2013 – 2014)

The objective of this research is to know whether there is any positive effect of using word chains game toward the students’ vocabulary achievement of SD 03 slawi kulon – tegal regency in the academic year of 2013 – 2014.
The population of the research is the fifth grade students of SD Negeri Slawi Kulon 03. To collect the data, the writer took 60 students from the population as the sample. The writer used two group design. First group consisted of 30 students who are taught by using word chains game and second group consisted of 30 students who are taught without word chains game and the writer used cluster random sampling technique to choose the sample that is divided into two groups. The instrument of this research is multiple choice test which consists of 40 items and research used each items has four options.
Data analysis of this research is tested by using t-test. Based on the result of the data analysis, t-ratio is 3,723 with the degree of freedom (df) = (n1+n2) – 2 = (30+30) – 2 = 58. On the level significance 5%, it is found that t-table is 2,002. It means that t-ratio is higher than t-table (3,723 > 2,002). It can be concluded that hypothesis of the research is accepted. Thus, the using word chains game gives positive effect of students’ vocabulary achievement at the fifth grade students of SD Negeri 03 Slawi Kulon in Academic Year 2013 – 2014. We know that the teachers should use a new method or technique in learning English, for example by using word chains game, itwill make the students feel enjoy and interested in learning process especially in learning vocabulary. The teachers are advised to use word chains game in English teaching and learning process to make real effective and fun to learn vocabulary especially for the students ofElementary School.
