THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COOPERATIVE INTEGRATED READING AND COMPOSITION (CIRC) MODEL TOWARD STUDENTS’ READING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Research of The Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 5 Adiwerna in The Academic Year of 2013/2014)

Reading is one of important skills that students must master. By reading various printed material such as newspaper, megazine and fiction book, the reader are able to gain a lot of knowledge, information, pleasure, and problem solution. However, based on the research interview, students still have problems in reading text. One of the problems that students face is they cannot find the information based on what they read. The unappropriate strategy in learning also makes this problem worse.
The objectives of the research are to describe the implementation of CIRC model to improve students’ comprehension in reading text, and to find out if CIRC model could give positive effect to the reading achievement of the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Adiwerna in the academic year of 2013/2014.
The population of this research is the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Adiwerna in the academic year of 2013/2014. The popuation consists of 316 students. By using cluster random sampling technique, the writer takes sample from the population and the sample is 60 students from VIII G and VIII H. This research is a two-group design. Data collecting technique in this research is reading test. Data analysis technique in this research is t-test.
The data shows that t-table at 5% level of significance is 1.645. While t0 is 2,577, so t0 is higher than t table (2,577>1.645). According to the calculation, null hypothesis is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It means there is a positive effect on the students’ reading achievement by the implementation of CIRC model.
Based on the research, it is suggested that teacher has to manage the time and the class well because CIRC model takes much time. Choosing the appropriate material also influence students’ comprehension. The creativity of teacher is one of the keys to make the successful learning of implementing CIRC model.
