A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS BETWEEN THE APPLICATION OF DISCOVERY STRATEGY AND TEACHER BASED LEARNING IN THE TEACHING OF READING TO THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Study at Negeri 2 Junior High School in the Academic Year of 2013/2014)

The objectives of this research is to know the application of discovery strategy and teacher based learning, to find out the differences of students’reading learning achievement between students who are taught by using discovery strategyand students who are taught by using teacher based learning.
Based on the theory of thinking, the research hypothesis is proposed as follows : there is significant difference of students reading learning achievement between students who are taught by using discovery strategy and students who are taught by using teacher based learning in English learning in the second year at SMP N 2 Ulujami in academic year of 2013/2014.
This research is experimental. In conducting the research, the writer used two group designs. Population of this research isstudents of the second grade of SMP N2 Ulujami which is totally 320 students. The cluster random sampling technique is used to take the sample. The sample consists of 50 students that was divided into two groups. Sample 1 as group 1 consists of 25 students who are taught by discovery strategy method and sample 2 as group 2 consists of 25 students who are taught by teacher based learning method. Strategy in this research, the writer used multiple choices reading test as the instrument of the research which consist of 30 items.
To analyze the data, the writer used t-test formula to know the difference of reading learning achievement of the two groups. Based on the result of data analysis, the score of t-table at 5% level of significances is 1,645. While t-ratio is 2,531. So, t-ratio is higher than t-table (2,531>1,645). According to this calculation, the research hypothesis of this research is accepted. It means that there is significant difference in reading achievement between the students who are taught by using discovery strategy method and those who are taught by using teacher based learning method.
The conclusion of this research is “Students who are taught by using discovery strategy method get better achievement than those who are taught by using teacher based learning method in the teaching of reading to the eighth grade students of SMP N 2 UlujamiPemalang.
