THE EFFECT OF APPLYING SGD (SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION) TECHNIQUE TOWARD STUDENTS’ READING ACHIEVEMENT AT THE SECOND GRADE OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental Research at the SMP N 19 Tegal in the Academic Year of 2013 / 2014)
Key word: Small Group Discussion Technique, Reading Achievement.
The objective of this thesis is to find out whether Small Group Discussion Technique give positive effect to the students’ reading achievement. Small Group Discussion technique is the part of many learning method which push the students to be active. In this technique divides the students into groups to discuss about the reading material. Based on the theory, the research hypothesis is drawn as follow: There is a positive effect to the students’ reading achievement who are taught by using Small Group Discussion technique in the Second Grade of Junior High School (An Experimental Research at SMP N 19 Tegal in the Academic Year of 2013 / 2014).
This is experimental research. In conducting the research, the writer uses two groups design. Population of this research is the students of the second grade of SMP N 19 Kota Tegal, which is totally 230 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to take the sample of research. The total of sample is 40 students. From the samples of students, 20 students are taken as experiment group who are taught by using Small Group Discussion technique, whereas 20 other are taken as control group who are taught without using Small Group Discussion technique. To check the students reading achievement, the writer uses a reading test as the instrument of the research. The type of the test is multiple-choice test. Test is used to know whether or not there are students reading achievement after they are taught by using Small Group Discussion technique.
The description of the data obtained between group I (Experiment Group) with a mean value (7,6) and group II (Control Group) with a mean value (6,8) average. Afterward, to analyze the data the writer uses t-test to know the differences between two groups. From the data, the score of t-table at 5% level of significance and the degree of freedom (df) 38 is 2,024, while the t-ratio is 3,265. So, t-ratio (t0) is higher than t-table (3,265 > 2,024). According to this calculation, hypothesis null is rejected, and hypothesis alternative is accepted. It means, there is a positive effect to the students reading achievement who are taught by using Small Group Discussion technique. Thus, Small Group Discussion technique should be applied to increase students’ reading achievement especially in Junior High School.
