Key words: PLAN (Predict, Locate, Add, Note) Strategy, Students’ Reading Achievement.
The objectives of this research are to find out that the use of PLAN strategy is effective in teaching reading to the second grade students of SMA N 1 Tanjung and whether there is significance difference on students who are taught by using PLAN strategy and those who are not taught by using PLAN strategy.
This research is a kind of experimental research with two group design. The population of this research is 320 students of the second grade senior high school students in Tanjung. It is divided in 9 classes. The sample is taken by two steps that firstly is using Cluster Random Sampling to determine the experimental and control group and secondly is using Random Sampling that used to takes 30 students from each group. The sample is 60 students; 30 students of XI IPA 2 who were taught by using PLAN strategy (experimental group) and 30 students of XI IPA 1 who did not (control group). In collecting the data, the instrument which is used is a test containing multiple choice form of reading test consists of 40 questions, it should be done in 60 minutes. The validity and reliability of the instrument are tested by using statistical analysis of Correlation Product Moment. The data of this research is tested by using independent sample test. It shows that t-ratio is 3,273 whereas t-table with degree of freedom (58) and on the level significance 5%, the value of t-table is 2,002 (3,273 > 2,002). It means that the objectives of the research are achieved.
It could be concluded that the using of PLAN strategy is effective in teaching reading to the second grade students of SMA N 1 Tanjung and there is significance difference on students who are taught by using PLAN strategy and those who are not taught by using PLAN strategy. The writer suggests that the English teacher should be able to apply the PLAN strategy, so the students are not bored and interested in teaching reading. However, this can support students’ motivation to read.
