THE EFFECT OF USING LITERATURE CIRCLE ON STUDENTS’ READING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study to the Second Grade Students at SMP N 2 Lebaksiu in the Academic Year of 2013/2014)

The aims of this thesis are to find out whether there is positive effect on students’ reading achievement after they are taught using Literature Circle and to find out the difference between the students who are taught using Literature Circle and the students who are taught without using Literature Circle. Literature Circle is a strategy where the students work together and they discuss a literature in depth.
Based on the theory, the research hypothesis is drawn as follow: there is a positive effect on the students’ reading achievement of the second grades at SMP N 2 Lebaksiu in the academic year of 2013/2014 after they are taught using Literature Circle. This study is an experimental research using two-group design. Population of this research is the second grade of SMP N 2 Lebaksiu which are totally 272 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling as the method to get the sample. The total number of the samples are 60 students.
Two tests are used by the writer to see the improvement of reading achievement. The tests are pre and post-test. Pre-test is used before the students are taught using Literature Circle. Post-test is applied after the students are taught using Literature Circle, and to find out whether or not there is improvement on students’ reading achievement.
The data of this research is analyzed by using the t-test formula. This test is used to know the difference of the means of the two groups. On the level of significant 5% and the degree of freedomis 58. The result of t-test is 2,806, whereas t-table is 1.645. It means that t-test is bigger thant-table (2,806>1,645).According to this calculation, hypothesis null is rejected, and hypothesis alternative is accepted.
Thus, it can be concluded that there is a positive effect of using Literature Circle on students’ reading achievement to the second grade students at SMP N 2 Lebaksiu in the academic year of 2013/2014. Furthermore, there is a difference between the students who are taught using Literature Circle and the students who are taught without using Literature Circle. Based on the conclusion, the writer suggests to use Literature Circle in teaching and learning Reading.
