Pronunciation refers to the production of soundsthat we use to make meaning. It includes attention tothe particular sounds of a language (segments),aspects of speech beyond the level of the individualsound, such as intonation, phrasing, stress, timing, rhythm (suprasegmental aspects), how the voiceis projected (voice quality) and, in its broadestdefinition, attention to gestures and expressions thatare closely related to the way we speak a language.Pronunciationis one of the most important aspects one has to master when learning English.
This study investigates the pronunciation mistakes in English made by Participants of English Conversation Club according to Error Analysis (EA) with the prediction that these pronunciation mistakes are neither coincidental nor randomly made.Theseerrors reflect the interference of different sound systems on English pronunciation. Speechsamples of the subjects’ pronunciation were taken through words and paragraph readings.Data was collected and analysed with the guidance of phonemic transcription in CambridgeEnglish Pronouncing Dictionary. Using Contrastive Analysis, potential difficulties of Englishpronunciation for the subjects research were listed by comparing the sound systems of English and native language of the ECC’s participants. On the other hand, the pronunciation errors of subjects werediagnosed into categories based on Error Analysis. Those are consonants, long and short vowel, and word stress.
The findings of this research help to provide a clearunderstanding of the common characteristics of pronunciation errors made by the subjects research. The common characteristics of pronunciation errors could be conclude such substitution vowel and consonant, consonant cluster confusion, omitting the word stress, long and short vowel distinction.
