THE EFFECT OF TASK-BASED INSTRUCTION ON STUDENTS’ READING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Research to the Second Grade Students of SMP N 3 Pemalang in the Academic Year 2014 / 2015)

The objective of this research is to find out the effect of task-based instruction on students’ reading achievement at the second grade of SMP Negeri 3 Pemalang in the academic year of 2014/2015.
Population of this research is the second grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Pemalang in the academic year of 2014/2015. The number of population is 224 students. The writer uses random sampling technique to choose the sample that consists of two groups. The first group is the experimental group and the second group is the control group. The experimental group is the students who are taught by using Task-Based Instruction and the control group is the students who are not taught by using Task-Based Instruction. The sample is 60 students. Each group consists of 30 students. The data of this research is gained from the result of reading test. Based on the computation of data analysis that the writer calculated, the value of t-ratio is 2,133. On the level of significance 5%, it is found that t-table is 1,645. It means that t-ratio is higher than t-table (2,133>1,645). It means that the research hypothesis is accepted.
The conclusion of this research states that there is a positive effect of using Task-Based Instruction on the students’ reading achievement to the second grade of SMP Negeri 3 Pemalang in the academic year of 2014/2015. The writer suggests that the teacher should be innovative more in teaching reading which can motivate the students in reading like by using Task-Based Instruction.
