THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING TPR METHOD TOWARDS STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN VOCABULARY (An Experimental Research to the First Grade Students of SMP N 1 Tegal in Academic Year 2013/2014)
Key word: Total Physical Response method, Vocabulary.
The objective of this research is to know weather there is positive effect of using TPR method towards students’ achievement in vocabulary on the first grade students in the second semester of SMPN 1 Tegal in Academic Year 2013/2014.
The hypothesis of this research as follows, “The Implementation of Total Physical Response method gives positive effect towards students’ vocabulary mastery to the first grade of SMP Negeri 1 Kota Tegal in Academic year 2013/2014”
The population of this research is the first grade students of SMPN 1 Tegal. The number of population is 200 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to choose the samples that consists of two groups. The first group is an experimental group and the second one is a control group. Each group consists of 30 students. The instrument used in this research is a test. The types of test used are multiple choice tests with four options.
The data is analysed by using t-test formula. It shows that t-test result is 7,171 with degree freedom is 58 and the level of significance (α) 5 % = 2,002. it is absolutely said that t-test is higher than t-table (7,171 > 2,002), because the t-test is higher than t-table, so that hypothesis of the research is accepted. The writer concludes that “There is positive effect of using TPR method towards students’ achievement in vocabulary on the first grade students of SMPN 1 Tegal in Academic Year 2013/2014”.
The writer hopes that finding of this study will be used as a starting point of the future studies on similar problem. There are still many other methods of teaching English that could be studied to find out the effectiveness of the methods or approaches in teaching vocabulary to be applied to the students.
