THE EFFECT OF USING SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION TECHNIQUE TOWARD STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN READING NARRATIVE TEXT ( An Experimental Study of the Second Year Students of MAN Pemalang in the Academic Year of 2013/2014)
Key words: small group discussion, students’ reading ability.
The purpose of the research is to find out whether using small group discussion technique give positive effect toward students’ ability in reading narrative text. It is an experimental study on the second year students of MAN Pemalang in the academy year of 2013/2014.
The population of this research is all of the second grade students at MAN Pemalang in the academic year of 2013/2014. The writer uses cluster random sampling to take 60 students as sample. They are experimental group (30 students) and control group (30 students).
Based on the background of the problem and the logical framework, the hypothesis of this research is: the small group discussion technique gives positive effect toward students’ ability in reading narrative text.
The writer uses a written test as instrument of the research. The form of the test is multiple choice with four options: A, B, C, and D for each item. To find the validity and reliability of the instrument, the writer tested the instrument to 30 students who are not taken as sample groups.
The analysis of this research is done by t-test. It shows that the t-test result is 4,274 in the significant level of 5% with degree of freedom 58, while the ttable is 2,576. The result: t0 is higher than ttable (t1) (4,274>2,576). It means that hypothesis of the research is accepted.
From the result of data analysis, the writer can conclude that using small group discussion technique gives positive effect toward reading ability of the second year students of MAN Pemalang in the academic year of 2013/2014.
