AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH LEARNING ACTIVITIES IN THE SOCIAL MEDIA “TWITTER” (A Descriptive Study of Twitter Account @EnglishTips4U as A Twitter Based English Learning Portal)

@EnglishTips4U is an english learning portal on twitter which provides english learning lesson. It gives the followers many english materials. It conveys the lesson in interesting ways with its interesting materials understandably.
The objective of this research is to find out what English materials taught and to discover how they are served in the English learning activities organized in @EnglishTips4U as the first English learning providing portal.
Approach used in this research is qualitative descriptive. Collecting data technique in this research is done through interview, observation, and documentation. The data gained from interview, observation and documentation is analyzed in three steps. The three steps are data reduction, data display and conclusion which is continued by data verivication.
The result of this research shows there are many materials related to english taught in @EnglishTips4U. It contains english grammar, english vocabulary, english idiom, english trivia, general english knowledge, english learning tips, and other english knowledge which can not be found in english school book. The materials in each lesson are delivered in an interesting well organized way. The admin who is in charge organizes and conveys the lesson by greeting them and givin ice breaking, giving a stimultant and brief description about the material which is going to be discussed, asking response about the material to the followers, giving a clear explanation along with some examples, then opening chance for questions.
According to the result of the research, the writer suggests that @EnglishTips4U should be more creative to make the lesson more interesting. The writer also suggests @EnglishTips4U to activate the lesson on facebook as well as on twitter since there are many facebook users in Indonesia and also considering facebook is the most visited social media in Indonesia. Furthermore, as the result of this study showed that social media can be used to have good English discussion, the writer suggests to people who are concidered as teacher to use social media in their teaching learning activities.
