THE USE OF LEARNING COMMUNITY TO IMPROVE THE STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY (An Experimental Study at the First Year Students at MAN Babakan Kecamatan Lebaksiu Kabupaten Tegal in Academic Year of 2014/2015)

Oral language or speaking is truly basic skill in the senior high school level, it is used more frequently than written communication. Speaking is the main problem to the students to be able to speak up because of lack of practice and using spoken English itself. The problems deal with their speaking skill are less of confidence, practice, worry about incorrect sentences structure, and lack of vocabulary. The unappropriate strategy in learning also makes this problem worse.
The objectives of the research are to describe the implementation of Learning Community to improve students’ speaking ability, and to find out if Learning Community could give positive effect to the students’ speaking ability of the first grade students of MAN Babakan Tegal in the academic year of 2014/2015.
The population of this research is the First grade students of MAN Babakan Tegal in the academic year of 2014/2015. The popuation consists of 266 students. By using cluster random sampling technique, the writer takes sample from the population and the sample is 40 students from X MIA 1 and X MIA 3. This research is a two-group design. Data collecting technique in this research is speaking test. Data analysis technique in this research is t-test.
The data shows that t-table at 5% level of significance is 1.645. While t0 is 5,365, so t0 is higher than t table (5,365>1.645). According to the calculation, null hypothesis is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It means there is a positive effect on the students’ speaking ability by the use of Learning community.
The conclusion of the research is that there is a positive effect of Learning Community on students’ speaking ability. By using Learning Community, it is expected that the students receive useful strategies in speaking by getting extensive oral instruction such as drill the students’ pronunciation so that their speaking will be clear and confident..
