THE EFFECT OF THE COOPERATIVE LEARNING TECHNIQUE NHT (NUMBERED HEADS TOGETHER) ON STUDENTS READING ACHIEVEMENT (An Experimental Study to the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Muhammadiyah Kramat, Tegal Regency in the Academic Year of 2014/2015)

The objective of this research is to find out whether there is a significant difference of reading achievement between students who are taught by using Numbered Heads Together and students who are taught without using Numbered Heads Together on the eight grade of SMP Muhammadiyah Kramat.
Population of this research is the Eight grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Kramat in the Academic Year of 2014/2015which is 280 students. Sample of this research consists of 44 students, which are randomly taken. Then, the sample is divided into two groups. The experimental of group the one taught by using Numbered Heads Together and the control group that is taught without using Numbered Heads Together. Each group contains 22 students. The writer used test as the instrument of the research. It consists of 40 items. The test is multiple choice with four options. The test needs forty five minutes to do. To know the validity and the reliability of the instrument, the writer had tried out by giving a test to 22 students having the same competence with the samples of the research.
Data analysis in this research is tested by using t-test to determine whether there is a significant difference in the result of the two groups. The research result shows that the degree of significance 5% there is a significant difference of the reading achievement between students who are taught by using Numbered Heads Together and students who are taught without using number head together. Based on the data analysis, it shows that t-test is 4,618 and t-table is 2,074 at the significant level 5 % and degree of freedom 38, t-test is higher than t-table (4,618 > 2,074). It means that the research hypothesis is accepted.
The conclusion of the research is that there is a significant difference of students’ reading achievement between students who are taught by using Numbered Heads Together and students who are taught without using Numbered Heads Together on the eight grade at SMP Muhammadiyah Kramat in the Academic Year 2014/2015.
