THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING WORD SQUARE TECHNIQUE IN THE TEACHING OF ENGLISH VOCABULARY FOR SEVENTH GRADE STUDENT OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experimental study of SMPN 4 Brebes in Academic Year of 2014/2015)

The objective of this thesis is to find out whether or not the Word Square Technique in the teaching English gives positive effect on students’ vocabulary mastery. Word Square primarily is a cognitive enrichment approach that teaches students to.
Based on the theory, the research hypothesis is drawn as follow: There is a positive effect to the students’ vocabulary who are taught by using Word Square Technique in the seventh grade students of SMPN 04 Brebes in Academic Year 2014/2015.
This is experimental research. In conducting the research, the writer uses two groups design. Population of this research is students of the seventh grade of SMPN 04 Brebes which is totally 272 students. The writer uses cluster random sampling technique to take the sample of research. The total of the sample is 60 students. From 60 samples of students, 30 students are taken as experiment group who are taught by using Word Square Technique, whereas 30 others are taken as control group who are taught without using Word Square Technique.
To check the differenciation of students vocabulary in experimental and control class, the writer uses a test as the instrument of the research. The type of the test is multiple-choice. Test is used to know the in the differences in students’ vocabulary after that they are taught by Word Square technique.
The description of the data obtained between group 1 (experiment group) with a mean value (7.94) , and group 2 (control group with a mean value (7.15) average. Afterwards, to analyze the data the writer uses t-test to know the differences between two group. From the data, the score of the t-table at 5% level of significance and the degree of freedom (n1+n2) =58 is 1,645, while the t-ratio is 4,388. So, t-ratio (t0) is higher than t-table (4,388>1,645). According to this calculation, hypothesis null is rejected, and hypothesis alternative is accepted.
From the result of data analysis, the writer can conclude that applying Word Square Technique gives positive effect on English vocabulary mastery in the seventh grade students of SMPN 04 Brebes in academic year 2014/2015.
