THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING SMART CARD IN THETEACHING OF VOCABULARY FOR THE FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (An Experimental Research in Elementary School in Taman Regency in the Academic Year of 2013/2014)

The objective of this research is to find out whether using Smart Card in the teaching vocabularygives positive effect to students’ vocabulary mastery.
Based on review of related theories, frame of thinking, a hypothesis of this research, the use of Smart Card in teaching vocabulary will give positive effect tostudents’ vocabulary mastery.
The population of this research is the fifth grade students in Taman regency. The sample of this study is 60 students. They become two groups. Each group contains 30 students. This research uses random sampling technique to take the samples. The instrument used in this research is a test. The type of the test is multiple choices with 4 options (A, B, C, or D). The number of the test is 60 items done in 60 minutes. The writer conducts try out test on 38 students who have the same ability with research samples to determine the validity and reliability of the test instrument. Data analysis is tested by using t-test, to test the significant difference of two groups. The t- table is 2,021 at the 5% significance level and degrees of freedom (df) 58. So, t-ratio is higher than t-table (4,086>2,021).The calculation data obtained hypothesis of this research is accepted.
Based on the result of this study, it is concluded that using Smart Card gives positive effect toward students’ vocabulary mastery of the Fifth Grade Elementary Students in Taman regency.
After doing the research, the writer has some suggestions. The teacher should have creativity to teach the students because there are many media of teaching to be applied in the class and the teacher should give motivation to students in learning English, therefore the students will improve their competence in English.
English teacher are suggested to use Smart Card in the teaching vocabulary. They should also motivate their students to work more creative. Furthermore, the teacher should give their students more vocabulary assignments and evaluations to improve their competence in English.
